Lanzarote is ideal with calm, clear tidal waters, year-round sunshine and an almost constant wind and beautiful clean cosmopolitan marinas.  There is nowhere better.

The RYA Day Skipper Tidal Practical Course is designed to show and instruct you, on how to take command safely and confidently of a yacht in known waters by day.  As a skipper you have many responsibilities. 

Our knowledgeable and calm instructors will coach you in these techniques and guide you through step by step, and then you will hone your skills by skippering designated passages in the beautiful seas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. You will visit different anchorages and marinas, and you will plan a passage and a pilotage plan and put it into practice.  Also included is night sailing to allow you to experience the joy and awe of sailing at night as well as some of the problems in identifying different lights and landmarks at night. 

If you successfully completeted the course you will have shown that you are a safe and competent in skippering a yacht in known waters during the day and will be issued the RYA Day Skipper completion certificate.

This qualification will also allow you to apply for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence). This qualification is required by most charter companies to show your competence charter a yacht. The ICC, can be obtained through the RYA (free of charge if you are member).

As you can stay on the boat, for an extra 2 days there is also time to experience the island from the land.  A must is the stunning Timanfaya Volcano, or explore one of the white washed villages. Or how about a trip to a local bodega (vine yard) to see how the local wine is made.  For the more adventurous who want to go to sea again how about some sea fishing for Wahoo, Blue Merlin or Tuna.

The RYA Coastal Skipper Course covers advanced skippering techniques in terms of boat handling and passage planning. Moving you from the shorter day passages at Day Skipper level to longer coastal passages.

The course also focuses on giving you a higher level of independence, crew management, watch-keeping routines and navigating in both day and night, which is often  in unfamiliar waters, so a higher level of overall navigational and pilotage skills is required, so it recommended you have passed the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtsmaster Offshore Theory course prior to attending.

At the successful completion of the RYA Coastal Skipper course you will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate and will be able to skipper coastal passages safely and confidently.

You will then have the opportunity at the end of the course to have 2 days ashore (Saturday and Sunday) and explore the delights of Lanzarote.  You could hire a bicycle (if still feeling energetic) or a car and travel inland to see the treasures of the island.  It may be a trip to Timanfaya or a trip to Cesar Manriques house.  Or you may just wish to walk the stunning coastal paths.  But with such a wide range of activities/trips available it is the perfect end to the week.

• Preparation and brush up for the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.
• Revision of advanced skippering techniques, close quarters handling under power and sail, navigation and pilotage by day and night, man overboard recovery and overall yacht management skills.

• 5.5 days – Meeting on the Sunday at 1000, with the preparation week running Sunday to Friday lunchtime and the exam usually commencing on the Friday afternoon and finishing in the evening of the Saturday (the exam duration is approximately six to ten hours per candidate)

He or she will essentially be a much more experienced Coastal Skipper and can do the same things more smoothly, for longer periods and in more arduous conditions.

Early in the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in the areas required to pass the examination however our experience normally leads us to work on the following areas; passage planning, man overboard recovery, close quarters handling, skippering techniques, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage and knowledge of the International Collision Regulations.

The instructor will debrief you fully as the week progresses and ensure that you get time to work on those weaker areas. Before joining the course, students should have the pre-requisite experience outlined above, navigation theory to RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory level and a thorough knowledge of the Collision Regulations.

The examiner will ask each candidate to skipper the yacht on several short passages and complete various demonstrations of their skippering and sailing ability over the course of the weekend.

Course Overview

This 10 day programme is unique to Endeavour Sailing and we have put it together due to the number of people being given 2 day action plans – we want to ensure that you are as well prepared as you can be to avoid disappointment and time and extra expensive organising when you can do your reassesments. It has been shown to significantly improve your chances of success.  

During the course, you will identify how different people learn, how you can adapt and alter your teaching style to meet these peoples needs.

We will develop your Yachtmaster level skills in the first week. In the 2nd week you will go through course programming and how to plan your days, develop timetables and lesson plans.  We will look at how to run the practical sessions, what tools you have available to teach and how to set up exercises and achieve success and get the best out of your students.

Course Overview

This is a 10 day course, with Course running Monday to Friday and then a weekend rest before starting again on the Monday through to the Friday.

The first 5 days are an assessment of your practical and theoretical skills and time to correct any issues you have.  The 2nd 5 days are when your Cruising Instructor comes on board and during this time you will be continuously assessed through out the week.

It is recommended that you have recent sailing practice and your practical and theoretical knowledge are to Yachtmaster Offshore level.

At the end of the week an independent moderator will come on board to verify the decision of our assessor.

Sunday

Arrive at 18:30, and we will meet you with a welcoming drink in Cafe del Puerto, settle you on to the boat, meet your other crew members with the evening to relax and get to know each other.

Monday

Welcome, Safety Brief and then set sail – at Endeavour Sailing we believe the best way to learn to sail is to maximise time spent on the water, and after the safety brief you will set sail and familiarise your self with the boat under sail, and how to manoeuvre the boat.

Evening – Free in Puerto Calero

Tuesday

We start by showing you how to prepare the boat for setting sail, we want to ensure that you understand some basic boat maintenance such as daily engine checks.

Sailing Exercises including Man Overboard procedures. Anchoring techniques to allow you to anchor safely.

Evening – Free in Puerto Calero.

Wednesday

Plan a passage and pilotage plan then set sail for Marina Rubicon (weather dependent).

Evening – Free in Marina Rubicon, or another marina depending on weather.

Thursday

Plan a passage plan and pilotage plan and set sail.  In the evening you will anchor in  a little anchorage of Isle de Lobos, a small island between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and have you meal on board at anchor.  Once it is dark you will do your night sail.

Friday

Set Sail back to Puerto Calero.

Course Overview

A basic introduction to navigation and seamanship for users of small craft sailing on inshore waters close to land. Ideal for users of RIB’s, small day boats, anglers and divers or yacht crews wanting to know more.

The course aims to introduce the basic concepts of inshore navigation and safety in an easy to understand and enjoyable format. This course is ideal for those operating smaller craft close to shore or are currently crewing but want to increase their skills and become more useful. It also serves as a great foundation for the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course.

During the course you will be introduced to the basics of navigation including tidal awareness, charts, almanacs and the use of electronic navigation aids such as GPS. You will be taught about harbour entry and departure pilotage including knowledge of buoyage and a basic understanding of the Collision Regulations so you know who has right of way! Time will also be spent looking at sources of weather information and what impact this could have on your passage. Towards the end of the course you will put all this information together to plan an actual passage. You will also learn more about what safety equipment you should carry and how it is used.

This course is scheduled for the Thursday and Friday as it is best followed by the RYA Competent Crew course, where you can put into practice all the skills and knowledge you have learnt during these two days.

Assessment

There is a mock assessment for you to try before the final assessment to ensure you are ready, you can try this up to a maximum of three times.

The assessment has two modules, each with a time limit of 1.5 hours with 15 questions in each section, and you have one attempt at each. The two modules are:

• Scenarios

There is a pass mark of 80% i.e. 12 out of 15, in each section.

Once you have successfully passed the assessment at the end of the course you will be able to download your certificate which you can save and then you will need to send the certificate to the RYA along with your commercial endorsement application or renewal form. 

If you do not pass the assessment you will need to contact us to discuss your options.  A reassessment fee will be charged at £6 inc VAT.

You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as knots, nautical terms, sail handling and helming, as well as how to “live” in the environment of a cruising yacht. During the sea phases section of the course you will spend all your days aboard the yacht visiting many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.. With a maximum of 5 students per course, your fully qualified instructors devote plenty of time to your individual needs. Safety is paramount in all RYA courses and you will learn

 At Endeavour Sailing we have developed our Day Skipper Fast Track Programme with this in mind and we want you to feel confident in taking a boat out on your own for the first time. 

Our Day Skipper Fast Track programme allows you to progress smoothly and confidently to Day Skipper level. We believe the 4 week programme allows you the best chance to achieve the above goal. 

Some schools offer this in a much shorter programme which often leads to failure and also inexperienced Day Skippers, who do not feel confident with taking the boat out on their own.  This shorter programme is also extremely intense making for a very stressful few weeks. 

Within our programme we also include the VHF Radio Course and give you the completed application form for you to apply for your International Certificate of Competence.  These two qualifications are being asked for more and more now as well for Bareboat Charter.

• During this course you will learn the techniques to safely navigate a yacht including passage planning and pilotage. 
• How to leave a berth and return to a berth in different conditions and in different ways including finger pontoons, stern to mooring and bows to mooring.

Divided into the shore phases in the classroom and the sea phase.  You will do two days in the classroom, followed by 5 days at sea and then finish with 2 more days in the classroom.

The shore phase is a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology, lights, International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea (IRPCS) and basics of seamanship. Invaluable for how to start making decisions on board ready for when you start your sea phase. At the end of the week you will have two assessment papers to complete and awarded your certificate.

Skippering a yacht for the first time is often a scary thought but it is a rewarding and thrilling experience. The RYA Day Skipper practical course (sea phase) is designed to teach you to “Take Charge” safely and confidently. A skipper does much more than navigate, you are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage.

Your experienced and patient instructor will teach you these skills and you will put them into practice as you skipper the yacht on short passages around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. Students live aboard for the duration of the course and visit many different harbours and anchorages to practice pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, is an essential skill for the aspiring skipper. You will complete at least 4 night hours sailing to experience night pilotage and identify lights.

Course Overview

At the end of the RYA Day Skipper course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day. Students who successfully complete the Day Skipper course are awarded the RYA Day Skipper completion certificate. This course will also enable you to apply for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence). This qualification is required by most European countries to validate your competence to own or charter a boat. The ICC, obtained by presenting your RYA Day Skipper certificate, will cover sailing yachts up to 24 metres in length in coastal waters.

We have also included a one week gap in the middle to give you some respite and you will find the course to be very much “eat, sleep, sail and repeat”, some time out is greatly appreciated.

All your learning will be monitored with daily and weekly debriefs which will be passed from instructor to instructor… having different instructors is a great thing as we all learn differently and having different styles of teaching and different approaches to skippering. We also mix crew so you get to deal with and lead unknown crew which really pushes your skippering and communication skills, a key thing the examiner will be looking for during your exam.

The area: We have a fantastic training ground, with excellent sailing conditions guaranteeing continuous sailing day after day. This is why many international professional sportspersons and teams come here year after year for their training. With wind acceleration zones we can also push your skills with heavy weather training.

All your accommodation is provided, except for the week gap, on board our boats, so no need to find alternative accommodation for the theory weeks. Our classroom is just 2 minutes from the boat and you will be issued with a key so you can access it 24 hours a day.

During the mile builders you will be in charge. There is an instructor on board for insurance purposes. But you will have to plan to achieve the mileage required, so the planning and running the week(s) is up to you.

This course is over 11 days, starting on a Monday morning and finishing 2 weeks later on the Friday afternoon.

Divided into the shore phases in the classroom and the sea phase.  You will do six days in the classroom, followed by 5 days at sea with a one day break between the theory and the practical course. Accommodation is provided from the Sunday 9^th October to Saturday 22^nd October

The shore phase builds on your knowledge already acquired at Day Skipper Level and moves you to more advanced offshore and night time passages.  The theory course is intensive and you will need to have revisited your Day Skipper Theory and thoroughly learn the IRPCS prior to attending.

Advanced first aid while afloat is rarely used but the ability to recognise whether a situation is serious and to look after the casualty until help arrives is a reassurance for skipper and crew.

This certificate is accepted for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster® Practical Exam candidates, RYA practical instructors, and skippers of small commercial vessels up to category 2.

Course Overview

The Short Range Certificate is the qualification required by law if you operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. The course will be taught using training radios (not simulators) and will be examined by a short written test and practical assessment.

All new VHF sets are either fitted, or can be interfaced, with DSC allowing calls to specific vessels.  If you hold the ‘old’ VHF licence (pre 1999) you need to upgrade your qualification if you purchase new equipment.  This can be done by attending this one-day course or, if no tuition is required, you can enter for direct examination.

Course Overview

This beach is difficult to reach by land which makes the experience even more special.

We meet you on board the yacht at 10.00am, when you will be given a short safety brief before setting sail.  You will be taken out by an experienced RYA instructor, and you will sail down the stunning  coast to Papagayo’s golden beach, where you will drop anchor to enjoy your complementary lunch, sunbathe or swim off the back of the yacht in the crystal clear waters. You will then sail back to Puerto Calero, arriving back late afternoon.  During the passage you will be given a chance to steer the yacht and will become actively involved in crewing, and lookout for dolphins!

This is a great day and most clients who try this are not dissappointed and come back for more.

The RYA Radar course is an introduction to the use of radar on small boats as an aid to collision avoidance and navigation.  If you have radar on board, the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea state that if you have a radar, you must know how to use it.

The First Mate week will move you from a competent crew member to understanding what is required to make you a confident skipper of a small yacht in familiar waters. 

Many people have done competent crew but have not had the opportunity to develop their skills since then or take charge of a yacht, but would like to do so in a controlled, supervised and relaxed environment before moving on to do Day Skipper.

Itinerary (subject to change)

Sunday: meet at 1830 settle you onto the boat

Monday: Safety brief and then plan passage and pilotage to Arrecife

Tuesday: Plan passage and pilotage to La Graciosa

Wednesday: Plan passage and pilotage down the west side of Lanzarote to Marina Rubicon

Thursday: Sailing Skills such as sailing up to buoys, Man overboard under Sail etc. and close quarter marina handling.

Friday: Plan passage and pilotage to Puerto Calero Marina arriving back around 1700.

We expect to achieve approximately 150 nautical miles during this week.

There are many flights into Lanzarote are on a Sunday but some may land a little later than 18.30, if so please let me know and we can meet a little later. You may then stop on the boat on the Friday night after the course free of charge and if you need to stay on board on the Saturday night after the course we charge a nominal fee of £15 (be aware though that at weekends we may need access to the boats in the day).

Please note the Passage Making and Drills week starts on the Monday but we meet on the Sunday, the day before,  at 1830 and settle you onto the boat and give you a short safety brief so everyone is ready to start in the morning.

You will be involved in skippering different passages, the planning and navigation. Night sailing is included, and following the discipline of a watch system, the passages are designed to allow you to build up those important miles and enhance your skills to take you from Day Skipper towards Coastal Skipper, boost your confidence or just extend your cruising experience.

We meet on a Sunday evening at 18.30 when you will be given a safety brief on the boat, in the evening you will eat ashore which is a great time to get to know your other crew members.  On Monday morning all final checks are done and then you set sail.

Our courses cover over 300 miles or 800 miles, and are intensive but immensely rewarding and allows you to experience different sailing conditions.

The final destinations for our mile building weeks are of course weather dependent. If unsuitable then we head to alternative destinations. We always keep you fully informed and give you details a week before departure. 

Course Overview

For our one week milebuilders we will leave Puerto Calero, Lanzarote and travel South around the Northern edge of Fuerteventura and then on past Gran Canaria heading towards Tenerife.  You will spend a well deserved break and rest overnight in Tenerife, and then travel back via Gran Canaria and the South side of Fuerteventura to Puerto Calero Lanzarote covering approximately 300 miles.

The two week milebuilders take us further afield around the Canary Islands, giving plenty of 60 mile passages. 

Both of these options are great ways to achieve your Yachtmaster qualifying passages, with plenty of opportunities for passage planning and pilotage into different ports.
