Lanzarote is ideal with calm, clear tidal waters, year-round sunshine and an almost constant wind and beautiful clean cosmopolitan marinas.  There is nowhere better.

The RYA Day Skipper Tidal Practical Course is designed to show and instruct you, on how to take command safely and confidently of a yacht in known waters by day.  As a skipper you have many responsibilities. 

Our knowledgeable and calm instructors will coach you in these techniques and guide you through step by step, and then you will hone your skills by skippering designated passages in the beautiful seas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. You will visit different anchorages and marinas, and you will plan a passage and a pilotage plan and put it into practice.  Also included is night sailing to allow you to experience the joy and awe of sailing at night as well as some of the problems in identifying different lights and landmarks at night. 

If you successfully completeted the course you will have shown that you are a safe and competent in skippering a yacht in known waters during the day and will be issued the RYA Day Skipper completion certificate.

This qualification will also allow you to apply for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence). This qualification is required by most charter companies to show your competence charter a yacht. The ICC, can be obtained through the RYA (free of charge if you are member).

As you can stay on the boat, for an extra 2 days there is also time to experience the island from the land.  A must is the stunning Timanfaya Volcano, or explore one of the white washed villages. Or how about a trip to a local bodega (vine yard) to see how the local wine is made.  For the more adventurous who want to go to sea again how about some sea fishing for Wahoo, Blue Merlin or Tuna.

The RYA Coastal Skipper Course covers advanced skippering techniques in terms of boat handling and passage planning. Moving you from the shorter day passages at Day Skipper level to longer coastal passages.

The course also focuses on giving you a higher level of independence, crew management, watch-keeping routines and navigating in both day and night, which is often  in unfamiliar waters, so a higher level of overall navigational and pilotage skills is required, so it recommended you have passed the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtsmaster Offshore Theory course prior to attending.

At the successful completion of the RYA Coastal Skipper course you will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Course Completion Certificate and will be able to skipper coastal passages safely and confidently.

You will then have the opportunity at the end of the course to have 2 days ashore (Saturday and Sunday) and explore the delights of Lanzarote.  You could hire a bicycle (if still feeling energetic) or a car and travel inland to see the treasures of the island.  It may be a trip to Timanfaya or a trip to Cesar Manriques house.  Or you may just wish to walk the stunning coastal paths.  But with such a wide range of activities/trips available it is the perfect end to the week.

• Preparation and brush up for the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.
• Revision of advanced skippering techniques, close quarters handling under power and sail, navigation and pilotage by day and night, man overboard recovery and overall yacht management skills.

Duration

• 5.5 days – Meeting on the Sunday at 1000, with the preparation week running Sunday to Friday lunchtime and the exam usually commencing on the Friday afternoon and finishing in the evening of the Saturday (the exam duration is approximately six to ten hours per candidate)

He or she will essentially be a much more experienced Coastal Skipper and can do the same things more smoothly, for longer periods and in more arduous conditions.

Early in the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in the areas required to pass the examination however our experience normally leads us to work on the following areas; passage planning, man overboard recovery, close quarters handling, skippering techniques, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage and knowledge of the International Collision Regulations.

The instructor will debrief you fully as the week progresses and ensure that you get time to work on those weaker areas. Before joining the course, students should have the pre-requisite experience outlined above, navigation theory to RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory level and a thorough knowledge of the Collision Regulations.

The examiner will ask each candidate to skipper the yacht on several short passages and complete various demonstrations of their skippering and sailing ability over the course of the weekend.

This 10 day programme is unique to Endeavour Sailing and we have put it together due to the number of people being given 2 day action plans – we want to ensure that you are as well prepared as you can be to avoid disappointment and time and extra expensive organising when you can do your reassesments. It has been shown to significantly improve your chances of success.  

During the course, you will identify how different people learn, how you can adapt and alter your teaching style to meet these peoples needs.

We will develop your Yachtmaster level skills in the first week. In the 2nd week you will go through course programming and how to plan your days, develop timetables and lesson plans.  We will look at how to run the practical sessions, what tools you have available to teach and how to set up exercises and achieve success and get the best out of your students.

Course Overview

This is a 10 day course, with Course running Monday to Friday and then a weekend rest before starting again on the Monday through to the Friday.

The first 5 days are an assessment of your practical and theoretical skills and time to correct any issues you have.  The 2nd 5 days are when your Cruising Instructor comes on board and during this time you will be continuously assessed through out the week.

It is recommended that you have recent sailing practice and your practical and theoretical knowledge are to Yachtmaster Offshore level.

At the end of the week an independent moderator will come on board to verify the decision of our assessor.

Sample Weekly Itinerary Endeavour Sailing

Sunday

Arrive at 18:30, and we will meet you with a welcoming drink in Cafe del Puerto, settle you on to the boat, meet your other crew members with the evening to relax and get to know each other.

Monday

Welcome, Safety Brief and then set sail – at Endeavour Sailing we believe the best way to learn to sail is to maximise time spent on the water, and after the safety brief you will set sail and familiarise your self with the boat under sail, and how to manoeuvre the boat.

Evening – Free in Puerto Calero

Tuesday

We start by showing you how to prepare the boat for setting sail, we want to ensure that you understand some basic boat maintenance such as daily engine checks.

Sailing Exercises including Man Overboard procedures. Anchoring techniques to allow you to anchor safely.

Evening – Free in Puerto Calero.

Wednesday

Plan a passage and pilotage plan then set sail for Marina Rubicon (weather dependent).

Evening – Free in Marina Rubicon, or another marina depending on weather.

Thursday

Plan a passage plan and pilotage plan and set sail.  In the evening you will anchor in  a little anchorage of Isle de Lobos, a small island between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and have you meal on board at anchor.  Once it is dark you will do your night sail.

Friday

Set Sail back to Puerto Calero.

Evening – Free.
